RBM Architecture, in collaboration with P3 Architecture, were commissioned in 2009 to design a new Long Term Care Facility in Kelvington, Saskatchewan. The project was shelved in 2010 in favour of moving forward with an Integrated Health Facility attached to the existing Long Term Care Facility. The Kelvington Facility was scheduled for the 7Ways and 3P in early 2013. The new program called for 10 Acute Care Beds, ER/Trauma facilities, and 9 room Primary Care Clinic.

Intensive Stakeholder Engagement sessions were conducted, and began with the 3P Event. This allowed us to work with the staff to create value stream maps to determine how the staff and patients provide and access care in the current facility. That data was then utilized during the schematic design phase to optimize the proposed building. Patient movement and transportation flows were reduced with a single point of access. Staff work flows were also optimized in the design, after construction the nurses saw an 18-55% reduction in their travel during their shifts.

Additions and renovations to existing facilities provide unique challenges in maintaining a sterile environment during an active and phased construction process. RBM Architecture utilized the Integrated Project Delivery method to ensure that the facility remained sterile during construction. The contractor fell behind the schedule during the project due to inclement weather, but RBM Architecture , a pull schedule system was implemented to regain lost schedule time, and has brought the project back on schedule.
